The Baudelaires mention Ogden Nash during their conversation about the couplets that are being delivered to them. Although they don’t resort to suicide, the orphans do share parallels to Ophelia, since they have lost a mother and father and experience other terrible circumstances. In the play, Hamlet, Ophelia drowns herself after Hamlet kills her father. The ‘It takes a Village to raise a Child’ brochure features a village named Ophelia. Also, it links with Snicket belief that he will never reunite with Beatrice. It also means that Count Olaf will remain persistent in his pursuit for the orphans and their fortune. This may link with how the Baudelaires’ misfortunes will remain with them. The phrase means the Raven will never leave the narrator, but the narrator interprets it as a claim that his sorrows will remain with him. It shares its name with the Raven’s quote “Nevermore” from The Raven. Both Snicket and the narrator share parallels Snicket also grieves for his dead love, Beatrice, his ‘ Lost Lenore‘ (TV Tropes term for a dead lover). Poe’s poem is about the narrator’s grief over the loss of Lenore (a lover from the poem, Lenore). Count Olaf frames the Baudelaires for the crime, hence the term ‘murder of crows’. Coincidentally, the collective noun for a pack of crows is called ‘a murder’, which links to Jacques’ murder. An allusion to the raven in Poe’s The Raven, since ravens and crows share a resemblance. The crow is the Village of Fowl Devotees’ sacred bird. Gothic imagery is brought up in this story.
